Making Homemade Smoothies

When it comes to making smoothies at home, there isn’t a lot to it. You literally throw everything into your blender, process it on high for a minute or two until all the ingredients are pureed, then pour it into a glass and enjoy.

Smoothies are great for light meals and snacks while on the go. I enjoy them as a quick weekday breakfast or a post-workout snack. With a wide variety of flavors from strawberry peach to raspberry oat, smoothies are a great way to make a satisfying meal without spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

If you are new to the homemade smoothie game, I’ve got an entire post on how to make homemade smoothies. Check it out, and you’ll be a smoothie-making pro in no time.

What You’ll Need

What makes this berry avocado smoothie special is the ingredients that go into it. This smoothie is mainly a blend of fruit and yogurt. You can also add optional extras to make it uniquely your own.

Strawberries, blueberries, avocado, plain greek yogurt, and milk on a wooden cutting board. The ingredients for a berry avocado smoothie.

Featured Ingredient: Avocaodo

While berry-based smoothies are common, berry-based smoothies with avocado are not. The avocado’s inclusion in this recipe adds a subtly nutty flavor and an extra creamy texture. It’s kind of like adding a banana to a strawberry banana smoothie without adding the extra sweetness.

It plays nicely with the berries’ natural sweetness and will help keep you feeling fuller longer. If you decide you like it, you’ll definitely want to check out my cucumber avocado smoothie next.

How to Make a Smoothie

Making a smoothie is as easy as 1, 2, 3. You can measure your ingredients by volume or weight, and as you gain more experience in what you like, you’ll be able to measure by sight. My preference is to put the blender pitcher on my scale and measure it by weight. It helps me to ensure consistent results without underestimating what I’m consuming.

Tips for Success

No matter how easy a recipe may be, there is always room for a few tips to make your success guaranteed. When it comes to smoothies, most problems are about getting just the right consistency.

  • For a super thick rich smoothie – Use frozen fruit and add the milk a little at a time as you blend the remaining ingredients together. You may not need all of the milk, so add just enough to thin out the smoothie as needed.
  • If your smoothie is too thin – Try adding a bit more Greek yogurt or ice cubes.
  • If your smoothie is too thick – Add more milk or thin it out with some water.

Optional Smoothie Add-Ins

Make this smoothie uniquely yours by adding in your favorite mix-ins. Remember that each of these have their own flavors and can impact the final flavor of your smoothie, so use caution. While I have tried some of these myself, others have been suggested by other readers. If I’m missing your favorite, let me know and I’ll add it to the list!

  • Leafy greens like spinach or baby kale
  • Coconut oil
  • Flax seed
  • Chia seeds
  • Cacao powder
  • Nuts or nut butters
  • Oats or oatmeal
  • Collagen powder

How to Store a Berry Avocado Smoothie

As with most smoothies, the texture of this berry avocado smoothie relies on the temperature of the ingredients in order to keep its thick, rich texture. It will not keep the right texture when stored in the fridge or freezer, so it is best when you drink it right away.

That said, if you absolutely must store it for later, the best method I’ve found so far is to pour it into ice cube trays and freeze it. When you are ready to enjoy, pop the ice cubes back into the blender to return it to its thick, smooth consistency.
